I have been thinking about this New York Times article since I read it sometimes last week.

Suppose the mute swans are high maintenance and possessive as it is described by the State of New York, so which method would you prefer to get rid of them: egg addling, gassing, decapitating? or shooting?
My friend thought it is such a 'New Yorker thing" to oppose the proposal by accrediting its literary and imagery value rather than its practicality or efficiency. But I wonder if this whole thing is really all about brand image vs. brand value.
Elegant presentation with the mute swan. I wrote an op ed last semester. This one ranks with one of the best I've ever read. The lede is powerful, although maybe a tad overstated, and the nut graf offers a nice transition to the body of the work.
ReplyDeleteAn aside: What is happening to NYC? deBlasio wants to get rid of the horses and carriages because they're dirty, and the Department of Conservation now wants to get rid of the free range mute swans--all of them. Sounds like the the former Mayor of London's war on pigeons in Trafalgar Square because he felt guano was unsightly and offputting.
