“Legionaries are Pope Francis’ problem now”

It’s a measure of how
bad things have become for the scandal-plagued Legionaries of Christ that the
first question a journalist feels obliged to ask the religious order’s new
leader is, “Have you ever sexually abused anyone?”
“Chris Christie's
Entire Career Reeks: It's not just the bridge”
Alec MacGillis@ New Republic

Has there ever been a political reversal
of fortune as rapid and as absolute as the one just experienced by Chris
Christie? At warp speed, the governor of New Jersey has gone from the most
popular politician in the country to the most embattled; from the Republicans’
brightest hope for 2016 to a man with an FBI target on his back. One minute, he
was releasing jokey vanity videos starring Alec Baldwin and assorted celebrity
pals; the next, he was being ridiculed by his lifelong idol, Bruce Springsteen.
Mere weeks ago, Christie was a straight-talking, corruption-busting everyman. Now,
he is a liar, a bully, a buffoon.

“For more than 25
years, it’s never been the right time for immigration reform”
David Nakamura @ Washington Post

Thirteen years ago,
President George W. Bush welcomed Vicente Fox of Mexico to Washington to lay
the groundwork for an overhaul of U.S. immigration laws — sensing that fellow
Republicans were finally ready to go along with a new legalization effort.
“U.S. Alpine team’s
struggles continue in women’s super-G”

It is perhaps an
unfair measure, but it is also the U.S. Ski Team’s most recent standard for
itself: Four years ago in Whistler, B.C., led by a trio of stars skiing their
best at precisely the right time, the American Alpine racers ripped through the
first five races at the Vancouver Olympics, earning an astonishing seven medals
en route to an eight-medal Games.
I'm beginning to deeply appreciate the Boston Globe ledes. I thought this was almost perfect. There is much doubt regarding the previous Pope Benedict's resignation.
ReplyDeleteThe New Republic's lede portrayed two extremes; the perfect Christie, and the seriously flawed Christie. He will be in trouble over the closing of the bridge [claiming ignorance] and the development project if the allegations he orchestrated these events are confirmed in court. I'm not sure, but I wonder if a wee bit of understatement might have been more effective.
