Does anyone else feel intimidated about blogging? I do. I’m
not sure what qualifies as “proper” blogging material. I don’t have any award
winning articles to share. My local paper this week was boring, uneventful. So
Fox tells us to blog. And I freeze. This is an intimidating group. I want my
blog to be worthy of your time.
I also don’t want to be that person. You know the one that
rambles and shares things that you could care less about. Or worse, the
proselytizer. The guy or gal, who wants you to vote this way or that, or worse,
talks about religion and wants to convert you. The blogger who talks at you and
not with you. I think blogging should be a conversation not a lecture. I
couldn’t find any strict rules about blogging and maybe that’s the point: there
are none.
At least no one is required
to read a blog. It’s a pull not a push system. There’s comfort in that. I’ll
blog about my local paper when I have something interesting to say. In the
meantime, I’ll read and learn more from your blogs --- about blogging.
Preach, love, share, hate, destroy, create...just tell a story and take us on an adventure. Let our eyes well up with tears or cause us to rise from our chairs and raise our clenched fists in anger and outrage.
ReplyDeleteOr tell a fart joke in Swahili and live in that world for a while. Someone is bound to come along for the ride.
Hahahahaha! Now, I have to go write my spot news.
DeleteI was scared when I took my first and second graduate classes a Harvard; the first on the Muslim faith, the second on Journalism ethics.
ReplyDeletePoor June Ehrlich, my professor last semester, didn't know I was terrified; well pretty scared! And then, I discovered she was a real gem! a gifted teacher, a scholar, and a storehouse of information. And the students were talented critics, and ahem, a great TA and in some respects co-professor Jeremy Fox--he was also teaching his own class at Harvard. Phew, probably getting a little thick in here.
So, we're taking a class with Professor Fox at Harvard. Fox said in the second class--everyone belongs in the class based on the first writing sample. That means you!
An aside: I told Jeremy how I felt privately before entering his class -- nervous -- and he said, "There's no need be nervous inside or out!" I have felt peace and learned so much with each lecture. So don't be afraid and write! Jeeze Louise, I hope someone joins me out here in blog world, there's a loud echo. Now, I have to tackle my spot news.
Writing is so intimidating! I am afraid to start writing sometimes because I fear the critique or potential of someone saying, "Leah is just not a good writer." I mentioned in another post that I work as a PR Director. While PR involves writing a great deal, the focus is not writing all the time like an editor or journalist. I do write for the editorial team (now that I have been asking to write more) and mostly summarize events or panels or latest happenings. I wrote one article that was ripped a part by our editor, but she said she liked the overall theme and concept. It is hard stuff, just keep practicing. Someone once told me that when you write, you should always be able to read what you wrote out loud to an audience -- without slipping up or sounding awkward.
