METUCHEN, N.J. — The former campaign workers who partied at the home of Barbara Buono this month were “just jubilant.” The people she bumps into on the street “are just happier to greet me.” And amid the deluge of supportive texts she receives, there are often pictures of Gov. Chris Christie sitting on the George Washington Bridge. She chuckles but doesn’t reply.
This lede seems to be ideal for someone who knows the background on the New Jersey Governor’s mishap with the George Washington Bride. However, if you are not familiar with the recent situation, this lede is confusing and would not make sense.

I always understood writing to be a way to tell the story, to make the reader understand, and to tell it as if they don’t know what you are writing about prior to picking up your story.

This lede has more of a complex sentence structure and could have been delivered much more simply.
METUCHEN, N.J. – Barbara Buono is Democratic politician running for office in New Jersey. Her opponent and current NJ Gov. Chris Christie, was just recently bashed in the news for supposedly ordering a close of one of the highest-traffic bridges in the tri-state area. Buono said she can’t help but chuckle when she sees text messages with pictures of Chris Christie stuck on the bridge.

  1. I enjoyed 'stuck on the bridge,' Leah, as metaphor! A communication's coup! The first lede is subtle and in my mind effective as well as yours. As someone who always slips verb tense, I noticed this immediately in both ledes.
