Ernest Hemingway

I mentioned last week that Ernest Hemingway wrote for the Toronto Star as a young man. He wrote as a freelancer, staff writer and foreign correspondent.

The Toronto Star recently published a collection of Hemingway's reporting (over 70 of his articles that appeared in the Toronto Star from 1920-24) on a dedicated website called 'The Hemingway Papers.'

Here's the link: http://ehto.thestar.com/

Enjoy!

  1. Benjamin, thanks so much for this! I've been reading Pulitzer feature stories this week, and one surprise and cheered me up, they are outstandingly literary in style. The language is lovely, the stories connected to the community. I plan to read a few of Hemingway's.

  3. Benjamin, thanks! I was thinking recently of how Hemingway said in one of his novels -- maybe many of them -- that he could easily make money writing journalism anytime he wished. It's almost like journalism wasn't even writing to him, just a side-gig he'd do without much thought.

    1. Hey Angus, thanks for comment! That's very interesting!

I read once that when Hemingway became a famous literary personality he could charge extravagantly for the journalism he wrote. His name and picture attached to an article were enough to drive huge sales. Wouldn't that be nice...
