Hi everyone,
Below is a great article from The New Yorker about writing structure. The author, John McPhee, discusses his experiences (his difficulties, really) with writing structure throughout his career as a journalist. It's definitely worth a read!

Enjoy and see you in class tonight!

Nice piece, although I haven't finished it yet. I loved Filipov's lecture. What will remain with me among many of his comments was that he wrote 50 word paragraphs strung together -- with 200 words at a time, and rearranged them for sequencing! I was surprised, in this one article, the teacher asked students to write three times a week--and I do think that's a critical key to honing one's skills along with expert teaching and editing.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this link! I just finished it today, interesting article.
ReplyDelete@Diane - I agree, it was a great lecture! And you're absolutely correct...practice makes perfect!
ReplyDelete@Angus - No problem! It's nice to know that even long-time contributors to The New Yorker struggle with writing structure!
